Man Who Triggered M.D. FOX Closing Arrested

HARTFORD — A 30-year old man was arraigned today after allegedly causing mayhem that led to the closing of the M.D. Fox Middle school yesterday.

Daniel Quinonez, 30, was charged with criminal possession of a pistol, carrying a pistol without a permit, attempted first-degree assault and machine guns.

In Superior Court this morning Judge John Cronan set  Quinonez’s bond at $1 million.

Yesterday M.D. Fox Elementary School at 470 Maple Ave.  was closed for the day because  of police activity in the vicinity of the school. Parents were  advised and students were removed from the school.

The Quinonez  melee began when police received a call at 4:17 a.m. reporting an armed robbery at a Mobil gas station and convenience store on Washington Street. Not long after that call,  officers  spotted a man fitting the description of the robber at the Mobil station on Whitmore Street, police said.

When the officers tried to stop the man, the man opened fire and fled the scene, police said.  No officer was injured.

In court today,  Quinones was described as a “prime suspect” in the gun robberies.

East Hartford School Board Member Arrested

EAST HARTFORD — A long-time school board member was arrested Tuesday night after a series of events triggered by a  hit-and-run car accident on Main Street, police said.

Henry J. “Hank” Pawlowski Jr., 41, of Oxford Drive, was arrested and released on a $100,000 non-surety bond.

Pawlowski is expected to appear in Manchester Superior Court on Jan. 26  to respond to charges of disobeying an officer’s signal, possession and possible sale of marijuana, operating under the influence, interfering with police, breach of peace, attempted assault on a police officer and third-degree criminal mischief among others.

Despite police report that Pawlowski exhibited violent  behavior and they had to Taser him to calm him, police released him on a bond that didn’t require him to to put up cash or collateral.

In his scuffle with the police, Pawlowski suffered head injury and was treated at Hartford Hospital, police said.  He could not be reached for comment.

The series of events, according to police,  unfolded this way:

Sgt. Peter Vanek of East Hartford police was parked at 500 Main St. when he heard a crash. Vanek said he saw a red car that had struck a car in front of it. The driver of the red car then sped off, according to police report.
Vanek tried to stop the driver, then saw him strike another car and keep going, police said. The car eventually was stopped on Main St. Police approached the car. Pawlowski refused to get out. Officers then pulled Pawlowski from the car and he continued to scuffle, police said. That’s when police Tasered and pepper sprayed Pawlowski.
Even then and after a police dog bit him, police said, Pawlowski would not stop struggling.

After Pawlowski was handcuffed and taken to police headquarters, police discovered he had five $20 bills and eight bags of marijuana.

Pawlowski has been on the school board since 199 and is a lawyer at the state’s Freedom of Information Commission. The agency’s executive director, Colleen Murphy, said she plans to meet with him today.

The Board of Education Chairwoman, Mary Alice Dwyer Hughes, said she will also meet with Pawloski before deciding what-if  any-disciplinary action is necessary.
