HARTFORD — The City in partnership with several community organizations will celebrate  February as Black History Month.

Mayor Pedro E. Segarra issued this statement in recognition of the celebration:

“As Hartford celebrates its 375th Anniversary, let’s pause to recognize all the great contributions that Black-Americans have made and continue to make that inspire all of us to achieve our very best.  Hartford is proud of its history, diversity, and culture.  This can be experienced through our arts and heritage community, our shops and our restaurants.  Let us not forget pioneers like Thirman Milner, the first black Mayor of Hartford and of New England; and Carrie Saxon Perry, the first black woman to be Mayor of any major U.S. city.  I invite you to learn more about trailblazers like these; explore Hartford’s unique role in history, and experience the energy and vibrancy that we carry into our future,” said Mayor Segarra.
