Hartford Mayor Appoints New Fire Chief

By Fran Wilson, Staff Writer

HARTFORD –Reginald Freeman is Hartford’s new fire chief.

On Friday, Freeman was sworn into office and pledged to institute discipline and leadership among city’s rank and file of firemen. He served as assistant chief prior to his swearing in.

This move marks “a new level of accountability,” said Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin.

This installment of anew chief comes after Kevin bell died in response to a fire.

Bell, 48, was killed in a fire on Oct. 7, 2014. The Chief Medical Examiner’s office said the cause of his death was asphyxia due to lack of breathing gas.

Reginald, Bronin said, “sets a clear tone” for improving a different level of services to city residents and businesses.

“I think a lot of people understand that it was time for a new level of accountability,” Hartford mayor Luke Bronin said.

The department is in the process of adopting a progressive disciplinary plan, and he says more changes will be coming.

Freeman, who has been on the job for about three weeks has been visiting firehouses to hear firsthand account of what needs to be addressed in the city.

“My focus is to get everyone pointed in the right direction, to move forward,” Fire Chief Reginald Freeman said.

Freeman said the radio reception as his men go into multi-family homes are inadequate. That is a priority, he said, as the city moves into the next fiscal year.
