Hartford Gets Grant for Tax Help

HARTFORD — The City of Hartford has been awarded a $25,000 Cities of Service Impact Volunteering Fund grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies to expand its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance  program, which provides free tax preparation services to eligible, low-income residents.

An additional $5,000 bonus may be awarded if Hartford meets its goal of assisting 1,000 residents.  Hartford is one of 23 U.S. cities selected for the award.

VITA volunteers are IRS-trained and certified to prepare tax returns and screen customers for special tax credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit. Services are in person and free for Hartford residents.

“This funding will enable us to expand the outreach of the VITA program, enhance financial awareness, and hopefully help residents keep some money in their pocket,” said Mayor Pedro Segarra.

Grantee cities were selected based on the quality of initiative proposals, scale and potential for impact, and caliber of implementation plans, among other criteria. Cities of Service Impact Volunteering Fund initiatives address issues in the Cities of Service priority areas of education and youth, health, neighborhood revitalization, preparedness and safety, sustainability, and veterans.

More than 60 mayors applied for Cities of Service Impact Volunteering Fund grants to support the implementation of nearly 90 initiatives. Grants ranging from $25,000 to $100,000 also will support efforts in Allentown, PA; Atlanta, GA; Austin, TX; Birmingham, AL; Buffalo, NY; Campton Hills, IL; Charleston, SC; Fall River, MA; Flint, MI; Hayward, CA; Kalamazoo, MI; Kansas City, KS; Louisville, KY; Mesa, AZ; Milwaukee, WI; Nashville, TN; Orlando, FL; Philadelphia, PA; Richmond, CA; San Jose, CA; Utica, NY; and Washington, DC.

CRT Offers Free Tax Preparation

HARTFORD— The Community Renewal Team is offering free income tax preparation services to help low- and middle-income Connecticut families capture maximum tax credits while saving them costs on tax preparation services – to the tune of millions of dollars, CRT officials said.

CRT administrators said that tax volunteers put more than $6.7 million into the pockets of Hartford and Middlesex County families through federal Earned Income Tax Credits, child care credits, tax refunds and savings on tax preparation fees. And CRT tax customers held on to more than $30 million in the past five years.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA), offered by organizations across the nation, offers free tax preparation by IRS-certified volunteers to income-eligible families. State and federal returns are e-filed, and refund checks are direct-deposited for those who have checking accounts or issued as a pre-loaded bank card for those who cannot open a traditional bank account.

VITA aims to help working families obtain tax refunds and credits and to educate the community about refunds and opportunities to grow their assets. CRT will offer VITA services at most sites from now until April 15, 2011.
