Civic Group Changes Name, Keeps Mission

HARTFORD — The Connecticut Consortium for Law and Citizenship Education, Inc., a non-profit organization that has implemented programs throughout Connecticut schools since 1976, has changed its name to Civics First.

The name change comes at an important time, as the organization seeks to strengthen its programs and expand private support for its popular educational programs, including mock trial and debate competitions for middle and high school students and the new Civics Bee for elementary students, officials say.

Last month, Civics First’s popular mock trial camp for students in middle and high school was held at the Hartford Judicial Courthouse. The week-long competition provided an opportunity for youngsters to conduct a mock trial in a real courthouse with real judges and peer mentors.

More than 20,000 children have participated in the organization’s programs, which are currently supported through grants from the Center for Civic Education and the state Office of Policy and Management.
